Thus began the secret eating and my ‘bad’ relationship with food. I realised 5 or 6 years ago that food became my crutch as a young boy. When I was bullied at school I would turn to food as comfort. That trend continued for years and still rears its ugly head now and again. Habits like the ones above are hard to break. Any bad habit is hard to break.

Luckily, I fell in love with exercise in my early 20’s and that love forced me to eat better. At least I thought it was better. At 26/27 I was in the best shape I’d ever been in up to that point. I'd been coaching for a couple of years and opened my own gym. I was mainly eating low carb, high fat and plenty of protein. But I was moody and restricting any foods I considered ‘bad’. I would rely on cheat days to have the foods I wanted to eat. The yo-yo cycle continued for the next 5 years.

Then – in 2017, I reached out to Jonny Landels and Next Step Nutrition.

He coached me using a flexible dieting protocol. I could pretty much eat what I wanted and still lose weight, perform and train well, and not feel like I was restricting myself or leaning on food as a crutch. My major problems come from disordered eating and sleeping. As a gigging musician and gym owner, late nights would often run into early mornings. Lack of routine and poor sleeping habits lead to poor choices, but I’m much better at managing it all now.

My breakthrough led me to sign up to the same nutrition certification as Jonny. I learned so much about evidence-based nutrition and coaching. I qualified as a certified nutritionist in 2018 through MacNutritionUni. I’d recommend that course to anybody. Since then I’ve coached clients using different methods (suited to the individual) such as calorie-counting, portion control, habit and behaviour coaching, and weekly check-ins. I’ve witnessed frustration, crying with clients on the phone, massive breakthroughs, and realizations that are powerful enough to help people make lasting changes. 

You see, it’s not enough to teach someone how to lose weight. The person we're helping has to have a big enough reason that they make lasting changes through deep exploration of their struggles. Once we know what drives them to make changes, we don’t dwell on it and keep revisiting it. We formulate a strategy, put a system or systems in place, and then we execute.

The most important element of any plan is coaching. It’s being there for your client to help, to hold them accountable, to listen, empathise, and meet them where they are, week to week. I’m lucky to have that kind of relationship with my coach.
